Overview
The Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen2 is the flagship of the CJ (CitationJet) line and the most capable single-pilot-certified light jet in production. Originally introduced as the CJ4 in 2010, the Gen2 upgrade arrived in 2021 with a modernised cabin, upgraded avionics, and enhanced performance.
What sets the CJ4 apart from its light-jet competitors is its performance envelope. With a range of 3,700 km and a top speed of 830 km/h, the CJ4 Gen2 outperforms many midsize jets while maintaining the operating economics and single-pilot flexibility of a light aircraft. It can fly London to Istanbul, New York to Miami, or Dubai to Mumbai nonstop.
Over 350 CJ4s have been delivered since 2010, and the type has established itself as a favourite of owner-pilots and charter operators alike. Its combination of performance, economy, and cabin space makes it one of the most versatile business jets available at any price point.

Performance
The CJ4 Gen2 is powered by two Williams FJ44-4A engines that deliver 3,621 lbf of thrust each — impressive for a light jet. These engines give the CJ4 a cruise speed that exceeds many midsize jets, while burning only approximately 480 kg/h of fuel. The result is exceptional range-per-dollar efficiency.
The aircraft can climb directly to FL450, cruising above most weather and commercial traffic. Its takeoff distance of 1,039 m and landing distance of 811 m allow access to thousands of smaller airports that larger jets cannot use, including many suburban and regional airfields close to final destinations.
Single-pilot certification means operators can reduce crew costs while maintaining safety. The Collins Pro Line 21 Advanced avionics suite provides autopilot, weather radar, TCAS II, and synthetic vision, giving a single pilot comprehensive situational awareness.
Cabin Layout
The CJ4 Gen2 cabin accommodates up to 10 passengers in a configuration that typically includes a forward four-seat club arrangement and an aft three-seat divan with facing seat. The cabin length of 5.26 m is generous for the light-jet class, and the enclosed lavatory with external baggage access is a feature not always found in this segment.
The Gen2 upgrade introduced new seat designs with improved lumbar support, USB-A and USB-C charging at every seat, updated LED lighting with multiple mood settings, and refreshed interior trim options. The cabin management system is controlled via a Cessna-designed app on passengers' personal devices.
The 2.21 m3 baggage compartment is accessible in flight, accommodating golf bags and enough luggage for a week-long business trip for eight passengers.

Competitors
The CJ4 Gen2 competes with the Embraer Phenom 300E, HondaJet Elite S, and Pilatus PC-24. Against the Phenom 300E, the CJ4 offers comparable speed and range with lower acquisition cost. The HondaJet is smaller and shorter-range but offers the lowest operating costs in its class.
The PC-24 is the CJ4's most direct competitor in versatility, offering unpaved-runway capability and a cargo door. However, the CJ4 counters with lower operating costs, greater speed, and a longer track record. For buyers seeking the best combination of performance and economy in a light jet, the CJ4 Gen2 is the benchmark.
Textron Aviation's global service network of over 100 authorised centres ensures rapid parts availability and maintenance support, contributing to the CJ4's strong dispatch reliability and residual values.
